HUBERT BERKE

1908 – 1978

deutscher Maler und Grafiker

german painter and graphic artist

Zen

Before deciding on pursuing the studies of art, Berke had been prepared to become a catholic missionary in China. That is the reason why he came into contact with zen buddhist culture and art very early on in his life. His fascination with asian philosophy brought forth the series “zen”, which takes on elements of Chinese calligraphy, interprets them and individually develops them further. Berke strays away from his preferred style of geometrical forms and changes his attitude towards color and space.
